Being a kid is great! But sometimes bad stuff can happen and it’s good to have people to talk to.
Is something happening that makes you feel bad?
Does someone hit or kick you?
Is someone really mean to you at home?
Has someone touched you in a yucky way?
Has someone shown you their private parts?
Is someone bullying you?
Do people fight a lot at your home?
Any of these things can make you feel really bad. It’s not your fault.
You need to talk to someone.
‘I hate it when Mummy and Daddy shout all the time’ – Chris
‘Mum slaps me and gives me hidings’ – Sarah
‘I didn’t like it when my stepdad touched me like that, but he told me it was OK’ – Lucy None of these are OK. You need to tell someone.
Who can you talk to?
Talk to an adult that you can trust. Can you talk to:
• your Mum, Dad or caregiver?
• your teacher?
• someone else from school?
• your brother or sister?
• Grandma or Grandpa?
• a friend’s parent?
• your neighbour?
• your aunt or uncle?
Find it hard to talk? Try writing it down for someone.
You can call Kidsline on 0800 543 754 at any time at all.
We’ll listen and talk it over with you. You’re not alone.
‘It does help to talk’ – Ben
Are you being bullied?
Has anyone ever:
• called you names?
• teased you?
• not let you join in games?
• said or written mean things about you?
• taken or broken your things?
• sent you mean texts, or messages online?
• hit, kicked or hurt you?
This is bullying. Bullying can feel really bad. But it’s not your fault.
What you can do
Tell an adult that you trust. Can you tell:
• your Mum, Dad or caregiver?
• your teacher?
• someone else at school?
• Grandma or Grandpa?
• a friend’s parent?
• your neighbour?
• your aunt or uncle?
You might find it hard to tell them. Try and write it down for them.
You can call Kidsline on 0800 543 754, any time at all.
We’ll listen and help you sort things out.
Don’t put up with it. Tell someone now.
Using the Net
If you get a nasty message or picture:
• Walk away from the computer.
• Show an adult right away.
It feels really bad if someone sends something mean to you. It’s not your fault! Talk to an adult that you trust.
The Net can be fun. But you need to be careful. You can’t tell who you might be talking to.
• Don’t use your real name.
• Don’t tell anyone your phone number or address.
• Don’t put photos on the Net.
• If you ever feel bad about something you see online, talk to an adult that you trust.
Using your cellphone
If you get a nasty message on your cellphone:
• save the message
• show an adult who you can trust right away – if you’re at school, show your teacher and if you’re at home, show Mum or Dad or your caregiver.
It feels really bad if someone sends something mean to you. It’s not your fault!
Always remember: only give your number to your friends and family.
What if my friend is going through this stuff?
Get them to talk to an adult that they trust.
Would they talk to:
• their Mum or Dad?
• their Grandma or Grandpa?
• their teacher?
• your Mum or Dad?
They can call Kidsline on 0800 543 754 anytime.
If you are scared for your friend, tell an adult yourself. Or call us and talk about what to do.
